Kicking Off RIP IX

Last year, I had a ridiculous list of twenty books for Carl's Readers Imbibing Peril VIII challenge. This year, year number nine, the big IX of RIPdom, I improved upon it ... with a thirty book list! Most of these are TBR books with a couple of library books thrown in. I hope to get through about half of these, possibly more since I have two heinous travel days (23 hours total on planes and in airports) to and from the east coast in September and the joy that is Dewey's Readathon in October.

I've made a Pinterest board like last year featuring all of the books that you can check out below (they link to Powell's non-affiliately if you want to shop for any of them). I'm most looking forward to reading more Discworld books (I've paused in the series for too long so it's time for more Death and Witches) and I'll probably reread the other two Samuel Johnson books before getting to The Creeps. It's one of my favorite series! First up though will be the Christopher Edge books because they're library books and have waiting lists on them so I probably can't renew. I'll be reading those on September 1 (or possibly August 31 because who am I kidding ... I love the RIP challenge!).

Are you participating in RIP this year? What book are you most looking forward to reading?

Perilously,
K

  2. I've just followed your Pinterest board. Looks good!

You reminded me that I wanted to reread some Pratchett for RIP - I love Carpe Jugulum and The Fifth Elephant!

I love John Connolly's books, especially Charlie Parker. Have you read his short story collection, Nocturnes? It's utterly brilliant.

    Happy reading!

    1. I didn't originally think of Pratchett so I'm glad I remembered!

I read Nocturnes years ago when it came out but don't remember much about it (I read it while sitting waiting to see if I got called to a jury). I should pick it up again!

  3. Hi Kristen,
What a wonderful list! Looks like we have similar tastes. :)
I've read quite a few of those books
    - The Monk (very, very good; like you, I'm planning on re-reading this but not sure if it's going to happen this RIP season)
    - Gothic Tales (excellent)
    - The Bloody Chamber (great collection, Carter has an amazing vocabulary)
    - The Mysteries of Udolpho (great classic, quite creepy)
    - The Thirteenth Tale (good mystery)
    - Unnatural Creatures (meh, I expected something better from a book with Gaiman's name on it).

You've made me want to read:
    Poe's biography - because I love Poe
China Mieville's book - never read anything by him yet
    The Creeps
    The Haunting of Maddy Claire
and White Corridor, because I love that cover.
Time to pile on the TBR!

    Enjoy your books!

    1. I've been a bit worried about Unnatural Creatures. I'll have to go into it with lowered non-Gaiman expectations. ;)
I highly recommend the series that White Corridor is in -- the Peculiar Crimes/Bryant and May books. They are great!

    2. Well, if it makes you feel any better, the stories are selected by Gaiman, not actually written by him. When I bought the book I thought he was the author and got really excited (that writing on the front cover really tricked me, I guess that's why they say "read the fine print"). Oh well... That isn't to say that all of them are bad, just not as good as I'd hoped.

That's from a series? I'll have to do my homework then and see what it's about.

  4. Great to have you back again. Nine years of doing this. Crazy. I haven't heard of the Samuel Johnson books...I'll be looking them up. That is the True Peril of this challenge, the way the book pile GROWS!

    1. Oh, they're great books! It's a YA series but so, so smart. They're a mix of fantasy and sci-fi.
And yes, I'm already seeing books on other lists that I want to add to mine but really, really can't ... can I? ;)

  8. So many good titles here! I hope you read and enjoy The Haunting of Maddy Clare -- I've really liked all 3 of St.James' books. I have a few more titles that I'd like to read but have so many projects to do in the next couple of months that I'm committing to only 2. But, who knows, with all these great suggestions I may go nuts on my RIP reading ;)

    1. I just picked up Maddy Clare recently and haven't read the author before so I'm excited! I always severely overdo it so I don't commit to much else at this time of year. :)
