Joining In: Once Upon a Time IX

It's the first day of spring which means it's time for Carl's Once Upon a Time Challenge to begin.
Saturday, March 21st marks the official start date of the ninth annual Once Upon a Time Challenge. This is a reading and viewing and gaming event that encompasses four broad categories: Fairy Tale, Folklore, Fantasy and Mythology, including the seemingly countless sub-genres and blending of genres that fall within this spectrum. The challenge continues through June 21st and allows for very minor (1 book only) participation as well as more immersion depending on your reading/viewing/gaming whims.
Hooray! As usual, I am going to read as much as I can from the books I have on hand. I'll also be grabbing a couple more Discworld books from the library (sob!) and waiting for a couple of holds to come in. But, just from a quick pull from my own shelves, here are the books I'll be considering and, in all likelihood, reading --

A couple of these are for the 100 Chapter Books Project (LWW and Alice), a couple are planned rereads (Un Lun Dun and Jonathan Strange), and the others are first time books that I'm really looking forward to.

What are you going to read for the OUAT challenge this year?

Fantastically,
K

  1. wow that's some pile! lol I read the Kristin Cashore a long time ago..and couldn't get thru Johathan Strange & Norrell (which is strange because it's my favorite time period to read)..anyway good luck! I will most look forward to Patricia Wrede book, I"ve read other books by her but not that one!

    1. This will be a reread of Jonathan Strange but it's been so long that I'll be interested to see how I get along with it this time! And I think I've only read those joint Wrede/Stevermer books by Wrede so this will be fun. :)

  2. Fantastic pile! I've been meaning to read Un Lun Dun for years now. Maybe I should add it to my list. Is there a book that you're most looking forward to reading?

    1. I loved Un Lun Dun the first time I read it and it's quite an easy read for being longer. I was somewhat bummed when I found out that Mieville's other books weren't anything like it. ;) And I think I'm most looking forward to A Matter of Magic although I have been waiting my whole life to read The Last Unicorn (I watched the movie A LOT as a kid).

  3. Wooo! I swear this year I am going to remember to participate! I have an Intisar Khanani book and a new Elizabeth Hand, and I am going to read those for SURE plus other stuff I have not yet decided. Once Upon a Time is such a good event.

    1. It really is. I am starting to clear my TBR of fantasy though so I think I might need to figure out what comes next and go shopping!

  5. This sounds like a great challenge. I love your stack of books! I see a Lloyd Alexander in there - I haven't read him for such a long time. His The Forgotten Door is in my TBR!

    1. This one is a novella that goes with The Chronicles of Prydain. I'm a little afraid that it will lead to a series reread. ;)

  6. That's an excellent selection. I've already reread The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe this year but might read a few more from the Narnia series for the challenge. I also have Un Lun Dun on my pile and Jonathan Strange. Good luck with the challenge. :-)

    1. Me too! I didn't participate the first couple of years because I was all about RIP but now I look forward to this one just as much. :)

  8. Argh, I should not do any more challenges but this looks like too much fun. I have some good candidates from my TBR == the challenge might be where to stop.

    1. Luckily this is three months long and you can choose to just read one book. Although, as you can see from my stack, I never stop at just one ... ;)
