#RIP XI : 12, The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie

I was about to start reading Alan Bradley's eighth and latest Flavia de Luce Mystery but then, on a whim, I decided to reread the entire series first. I won't have enough time to read them all before the end of the month as part of the RIP Challenge so I'll just make this a personal project for the fall and winter, using them as comfort reads as the days get shorter and the rain heavier.

The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie was possibly better than I remembered it being. The writing is fantastic, the characters are sufficiently complex, and the peril was quite real. It didn't even matter that I could kind of remember some of the details of the various crimes. I was there mostly for Flavia, the de Luces, and Dogger and just wanted them all to be safe and well. Now that I've started the second book, I'm even happier that I decided to do these rereads!

Do you reread mystery series? Which is your favorite one to revisit?

Picking my poison,
K

  1. Too funny ... I was going to start the 6th Flavia book tonight at work and decided to put it off (yet again) in favor of something more "Halloweeny" and then decided that I really don't care that much about staying "seasonal" since I haven't spent any quality time with Flavia since March! Besides, I tend to fly through these so I'll likely still be able to squeeze a couple more Halloweenish books in before next Monday.

As for revisiting mystery series, aside from the classics (Agatha Christie, Rex Stout, Arthur Conan Doyle), I do quite a bit of rereading of Sharyn McCrumb's books and will probably do the same with Charlotte MacLeod's if I ever let myself finish them in the first place :)

    1. The classics definitely work well on reread for some reason. I have reread quite a few Christies.

  2. Funny, I couldn't get into the Flavia stories. I feel bad about that. I do re-read mysteries all the time though; I'm really good at forgetting whodunit. My favorites are Margery Allingham, Ngaio Marsh, and Patricia Wentworth, but yesterday I checked 4 Christies out of the library. They're my candy.

    1. Yeah, they seem like they would work for you. Just goes to show that we are all super individual as readers!
I still have to start on Allingham and find more Marsh. I think I've only read about 5 of hers but I really liked them!

  3. I've probably reread Elizabeth Peters' Vicky Bliss series more often than any other book series. LUV IT

    1. So, I've read Amelia Peabody series through like three or four times but have only read two or three Vicky Bliss books. I don't know why I didn't get into them the same way. I think I may have just been Peters-ed out at the time. I should start again with Vicky!
