Wrapping Up #MarchMagics 2022

Thank you all for joining in again this year to celebrate the wonderful works of Diana Wynne Jones and Terry Pratchett. It has been eleven years since Diana passed and seven since Terry left us but it still feels so recent.

I was able to read almost everything I planned and certainly met new friends and enjoyed my time with the old ones. I had a lot of fun with Sir Pterry's The Last Continent, The Wee Free Men (a relisten), Dodger (a relisten), and Equal Rites (a reread). I also watched the 2008 miniseries The Colour of Magic (with story from both The Colour of Magic and The Light Fantastic) and listened to LeVar Burton read the short story The Troll Bridge on his podcast. It was also quite a treat to read the biography The Magic of Terry Pratchett by Marc Burrows.  I'm looking forward to having Rob Wilkins' Pratchett biography (Sept 2022) to read next year.

As for DWJ, I got through Dark Lord of Derkholm (a relisten), Cart and Cwidder, Drowned Ammet, and The Spellcoats (a reread). I started The Crown of Dalemark the other day and got about 50 pages in (where Mitt and Moril first meet) and decided that I just wasn't ready to finish my final new-to-me DWJ. I will save this book until next year and postpone that particular sadness.

How was your March Magics month? Let me know what you ended up reading!

  1. Thank you so much for continuing the magic in March! I read Pyramids from Discworld (haven't blogged it yet) and from DWJ: Sudden Wild Magic, Witch's Business, and Unexpected Magic. A lovely month!

  2. An impressive haul of reads, rereads and listens, Kristen, and thanks again for hosting this -- so glad you were happy to respond to my nudge!

I had other reading commitments (notably Reading Wales and Reading Ireland) but managed to fit in a new-to-me STP title Witches Abroad plus a reread of DWJ's The Spellcoats and a skim (re)read of Cart and Cwidder, all of which I managed to review, phew!

The good news is that I plan to continue with more magical reads from these three through the year: for example, after three reads over the years of Everard's Ride I still haven't got round to a review, so I hope to make it a priority for 2022; and I've got at least three Pratchett titles which I haven't yet read to keep me going for a bit, yay! Thanks again, and what a lovely meme image you conjures up at short notice!

    1. I definitely won't be able to resist reading more Pratchett soon because I didn't get to much that was new this month. One of my paperbacks turned out to be incredibly misprinted and all of the pages were out of order. I just got the replacement and am still wanting to read it (Jingo).
Thank you so much for the nudge! I needed this burst of comfort reads and am so glad that I could facilitate that for you as well. :)

  3. I just finished a reread of The Spellcoats, thank you for that inspiration. I also enjoyed discovering the tales for younger readers, Dragons at Crumbling Castle and Earwig and the Witch. I think you made a wise choice to delay reading The Crown of Dalemark. Looking forward to your thoughts next year.

    1. Perhaps my reading my final DWJ next year will prompt some others to do the same. I know many of us are dreading that final read! And I'm happy that there is a third collection of Pratchett's children stories that I will definitely have in hand for next year.

  4. Thank you again sooo much for hosting!

I just posted my wrapup post: https://thepagedreamer.wordpress.com/2022/04/02/wrapup-marchmagics-2022/

I read Going Postal and Making Money, re-read Deep Secret and part of The Merlin Conspiracy (I guess I get to stretch out the celebration) and watched Going Postal. I even had a Howl-themed birthday cake. ^_^

Wee Free Men, Derkholm, and the Dalemark books are all amazing! I love them so much. I can totally understand wanting to wait on Crown of Dalemark. I hope you'll enjoy it next year! It's one of my favorite DWJs. ^_^

    1. I started watching Going Postal a few months ago but then decided I should read that one first too. I'm starting to get down near the single digits with my Discworld unreads and that's a bit nerve wracking but not as bad as that last DWJ! I'm glad that so many people love it though so it should be a more sweet than bitter experience.
Thank you for joining in again this year and for your enthusiasm. I loved seeing all of the engagement on your blog!
