RIP VII Read #7: The House of Silk

It's getting difficult to review books that I read weeks ago but I still want to bring them to your attention so please excuse my brevity in the next few reviews. What can I say about The House of Silk by Anthony Horowitz? It's a Sherlock Holmes story that was approved by the Conan Doyle Estate and it's practically pitch perfect. It reads just like one of the originals. Written by an aging John Watson, this is a story that was supposedly too sensitive to be published at the time and therefore was held under lock and key for one hundred years. Though it doesn't actually have that much bite, there are Victorian social issues explored in the story that make this worth reading even if you aren't a Holmes fan.

To the point,
K

  2. I know what you mean, the longer ago you've read a book, the more difficult it becomes to write oodles of text about it. No worries, your concise review is fine :)

I've been wanting to read House of Silk for ages, but I'm guessing that it's better to start with the originals?

    1. You would be perfectly fine starting with this one. I don't think any of the Sherlock Holmes books really need to be read in order if you're at all familiar with the characters -- which I think a lot of people are by now with all of the pop culture references, movies, tv shows and the like. Now I definitely want to go back and reread all of the original stories though!

    1. There are so many Sherlock novels out there right now. I don't know why this one was approved but it was definitely true to the originals.

    1. Oh, that's right! He wrote Foyle's War. I remember looking that up. He's definitely very good at authentic period and feel!
