Joining the 2013 Science Fiction Experience

I finally joined Carl's Science Fiction Experience last year for the first time and really enjoyed the variety it brought to my reading so I will be joining again this year. It runs from January 1st to February 28th and there are no rules or goals or anything other than enjoying one or more sci-fi reads or watches (tv or movies).

I've decided to pull three books off of my shelves for this event --

Neuromancer by William Gibson
This one is actually from my husband's shelves. It's also on the 1001 List which is why I'm finally going to give it a read. It's from 1984. I have to admit that I'm a bit nervous about this one. It seems really different from what I normally read.

The Affinity Bridge by George Mann
This is also from my husband's shelves though I had heard of the series first and had already added it to my library TBR before he mentioned it. He beat me to reading the books though and is finishing the third book in the series right now. This will be the newest book I read for this event (2008).

Impossible Things by Connie Willis
Because her "best" short stories will be published in one volume this summer, I thought I should get familiar with her style and subject matter with this collection from 1993 (stories from 1986-1992). Three of the stories won Nebula Awards and two of those also won Hugo Awards.

Are you joining the "experience" this year? What will you be reading?

Off to another world or two,
K

  1. Neuromancer appears to be a must-read for sf lovers, and has therefore been languishing on my to-read list as well :s Perhaps I'll get to it this year. A short stories bundle by Connie Willis? That definitely calls for finally diving into Blackout/All Clear! I do love the cover of The Affinity Bridge. And I wish bf had his own bookshelf, then I wouldn't feel so bad about buying books ;)

    1. I did Blackout and All Clear in one straight through read for this event last year and LOVED them. I'm excited about the short stories! And though I'm worried about Neuromancer, I'll be glad to have read it. It's definitely nice to have some extra shelves to browse and something to balance out my own. I have probably 5x the books that he does but he doesn't complain. :)

  2. Ooh...a friend of a friend recommended Impossible Things to me, and it's been kicking around in my brain lately. I'll be curious to see what you think!

    1. I just saw someone mention a collection that had a Connie Willis story in it and they gave her story an "A" so I have high hopes!

  3. Love Connie Willis. To Say Nothing of the Dog is a favourite re-read.

I've tried Neuromancer and haven't been able to get into it. I've heard William Gibson speak, and he's extremely intelligent. Maybe that's my problem!

    1. I've read TSNotD and Blackout and All Clear and loved all three so I have very high hopes for the short stories! As for Neuromancer, I really am worried. But my husband loves Gibson so I guess I should look at it as a way to get to know him a little better. :)

    1. I still haven't started my reading for this either. Glad it's two months long! I'm guessing the reading will go by quickly though. I hope you get a chance to join in with at least one book!

  6. Glad you are participating with us! Love that cover for the Connie Willis book. Haven't seen it before but I'm going to be looking for that one.

I have yet to read Neuromancer. I saw the new Harper Voyager version and I'm tempted to pick that one up when it comes out.

    1. I kind of like the feeling of grabbing one of my husband's favorite books off of the shelf and trying to see what he loves about it. When we were in college, I read most of the books on his shelf and liked most of them though I didn't expect to!

  7. My wife and I have certainly done that with each others books over the years.

    1. Sadly, he's not interested in many of my books but the rare few he's read have gone pretty well and I'm okay with that. :)

  8. My wife reads a lot of mysteries and YA fiction so it isn't really outside of my interests.
