DWJ March: Odds and Ends #4

almost all my DWJ books in one place ... finally
I just wanted to share a couple more DWJ posts with you before the month ends -

Jenny wrote about Changeover, Diana's adult novel that is sadly super out-of-print.

Sarah has made paper art of Diana and it's awesome!

Anastasia reviewed The Game and The Dark Lord of Derkholm. This gal has rocked the DWJ reading this month!

Also, these are the DWJ-related photos I've taken this month. I think they sum up my experience nicely.

  1. It's been a good month! Our Howl's Moving Castle read-aloud has been going great, with my 9yo asking for an extra chapter every night. Last night I had to keep it to just one--my voice was suffering. The humor really comes out beautifully when you read it aloud.

My main problem is finding a good voice for Calcifer--his voice is described as crackly, which is both hard to do and an awful lot like Sophie's cracked old lady voice, which is already very hard on my vocal cords. Suggestions, anyone?

I did another thing I should have told you about! I watched the whole Archer's Goon miniseries on Youtube. It's 6 episodes long and was made in about 1992 on a budget of about £10. It's pretty awful (ha!), though the Goon eventually grew on me. Dillian's gowns are pretty stunning, and Shine's not bad. Howard and Awful tend to emote by yelling. I don't know if Archer's Goon CAN be filmed well, but I'd love to see an attempt with better production values that kept to the story.

    1. I just had to do a read-aloud with Z (Ozma of Oz) that had a lot of male voices, some that were supposed to be gravelly (lion, tiger) and it was tough! I had a sore throat many nights. Sometimes, I just have to decide to let the authenticity go for the sake of my voice.

And OH! I totally want to watch the miniseries. I'm sure it will be bad but worth it. Thanks for bringing it up!

  3. Thanks for hosting this, Kristen, you lovely person! Howl IS a slitherer-outer. :p

(I love that description, by the way. That is a hilarious way of putting someone in his place. SOPHIE.)

    1. Yes he is. I wonder if Sophie made him worse though by calling him that, what with her magic and all ... ;)

  4. I'm happy to say that Changeover isn't as out of print as you might think. Last year after looking around for a copy online and seeing some of the outrageous prices that sellers were charging for any and all copies, I came across a link on Diana's official website that linked the Moon Dust books, a small publisher that had picked up Changeover and put it back in print. The best part was that the price was reasonable. I've included the link here for anyone who would like to order a copy.

    1. Thanks for the info! It's a very reasonable price compared to the ridiculous used prices out there. I hate to see readers gouged just for trying to get access to a book.

    1. I've started thinking about next year. :) I want to change it up so that it's not just the same thing every year but it seems a shame to not have it!

    2. I agree! Why discontinue a good thing?!? :)

  6. I love your DWJ pictures! I am also very much interested in your editions of the Chrestomanci books-- are they new ones? The spines are intriguing...

    1. I have had the Chrestomancis for a while -- maybe seven or eight years? I still see those versions around in bookstores so you could probably find them. They're two-in-ones which makes it hard for me to read one story at a time. I always just keep going!
