Books I'm Looking Forward To in 2013

Yes, my friends, I still have 230+ unread books in my home. But yes, I'm still excited about some new releases in 2013. You can't stop a dedicated reader from growing their TBR list, can you? Here are the books that are already on my wishlist and that I'll likely pre-order.

January 29
Speaking From Among the Bones by Alan Bradley
(already read an ARC but need a hardcover for my collection)

March 26
Leaving Everything Most Loved: A Maisie Dobbs Novel by Jacqueline Winspear
(probably won't buy until paperback because that's what my collection is)

June 18
The Ocean At the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman
The Watcher in the Shadows by Carlos Ruiz Zafón

(no cover art released yet)

July 9
The Best of Connie Willis: Award-Winning Stories

August 20
A Fatal Likeness by Lynn Shepherd

I think Louis Bayard is working on another book but I'm not sure if it will come out this year. Still no news that I can find on the next Jonathan Strange book from Susanna Clarke or the next Sarah Waters. Jasper Fforde is releasing the US edition of the second book in the Last Dragonslayer series but I've already bought a UK version because I'm impatient. Charles Finch's newest Charles Lenox mystery (A Death in the Small Hours) already came out in November so I'll be reading that soon. And I'll still be looking for a copy of Essie Fox's Elijah's Mermaid. It doesn't seem to be available to buy from any of my normal sites (Amazon, Book Depository and Powell's). I may just have to have a UK friend buy me a copy and send it over the pond!

Are there any other books coming out this year that you think I should put on my buy list?

Excited about new prose,
K

  1. That Neil Gaiman book is on my wishlist too... (NEIL. GAIMAN!) I think the new Patrick Ness is going to be something amazing, and I haven't even seen a synopsis yet. Happy reading in 2013!

    1. I am so dang excited about the Neil Gaiman but scared that I am going to stand in line for hours to get it signed. ;)
And I really need to start Patrick Ness!

    1. I only found it because I was looking for stuff from favorite authors and she mentioned it on her website. It's in Amazon and everything!

  3. I'm currently reading Lynn Shepher's Solitary House and really enjoying it--looking forward to reading A Fatal Likeness also. I loved reading about the Shelley's when I read Jude Moran's Passion in 2012, and so this will be perfect.

I still haven't read any Maisie Dobbs novels, but they do come highly recommended.

I love the cover of Speaking From Among the Bones--I have Bradley's Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie on my must-read (actually the TBR Pile Challenge), so I might be reading this one too if I like Bradley.

Enjoy growing your pile--it's just part of who we readers are!

    1. I loved Solitary House and all of its ties to Bleak House! I will look for your thoughts soon. And yes, it's just who we are. :)

  4. Roflol! Actually, I'm trying not to focus on new releases and to read all the unread books at home first. The bf is wondering how long this will last ;-) A new Gaiman and a new Ruiz Zafon coming out in June? Hmm, maybe if I stick to only half a year of self-imposed book buying ban? xD

Happy new year, Kristen, that we many all read the books we want when we want it, whether we own them already or not :)

    1. I'm actually glad that this list was only six books. That's not too many to add and still make a good dent in the books I already own! And I love your wish ... I want to actually do better at reading books when I'm interested in them instead of waiting too long and then missing that time!

  5. Cool choices … I plan on reading some of them too. (See, we do have some crossover.)

  6. I just couldn't be more excited about the Neil Gaiman book. It feels like it's been a million years since his last book was released, even though I guess it's only been like five?

    1. Me too! I still haven't read Anansi Boys though so it hasn't been that bad. :)

  7. I was just thinking yesterday that I hoped Neil Gaiman would write another book! I just started Good Omens which is the very last one of his books I hadn't read, and I was a little sad. Thanks for telling me, I'm looking forward to it.

    1. It's always so incredibly sad to catch up with an author. Why can't they just churn out one a year?! ;) At least Neil Gaiman is alive and writing and there should be more after this one. I'm still holding on to Emma because it's my last Jane Austen.

    2. I totally admit to hoarding books of authors that I don't want to run out of material from (that's a terrible sentence). Atwood is one of these even though I now have TOO MANY books of hers unread on my shelf...

    3. Oh, we're such a strange bunch. ;)

  8. Ok, I've seen that Gaiman book EVERYWHERE today! But haven't heard one peep about the new Bradley. Excited but reminds me that I'm a few (ahem, 2) books behind.

    1. It's starting to get super buzz and it doesn't even come out for six months! I wonder if there will be ARCs ...
And I would likely be behind on the Bradleys except that I keep getting review copies and ARCs. :)

  9. I am looking forward to the Winspear even though I am a book behind! I really must catch-up with the Bradley. I have been eyeing the collected edition.

    1. I am two or three behind because of the paperback thing but it's okay! And I didn't know there was a collected edition of the Bradley. I wonder if it'll be released in the US.

  10. I'm really wanting to host a big ol' group read when the Gaiman book comes out. I think we would have a lot of fun with it as a ton of us are looking forward to it.

Very much looking forward to the new Flavia too.

    1. A group read of the Gaiman would be AWESOME and would probably be a very large group! And I haven't written up about the Flavia yet but I've read it and, as I always seem to say, it's the best one yet. :)
